Thearrivalofhorseswasparticularlysignificant,asequineshadbeenextinctintheAmericassincetheendoftheprehistoriciceage.However,horsesquicklymultipliedinAmericaandbecamecrucialtothesuccessoftheSpanishandlatersettlersfromothernations.TheearliesthorseswereoriginallyofAndalusian,BarbandArabianancestry,[8]butanumberofuniquelyAmericanhorsebreedsdevelopedinNorthandSouthAmericathroughselectivebreedingandbynaturalselectionofanimalsthatescapedtothewild.TheMustangandothercolonialhorsebreedsarenowcalledwild,butinrealityareferalhorses—descendantsofdomesticatedanimals.
Thus,thoughpopularlyconsideredasaNorthAmericanicon,thetraditionalcowboyactuallycomesfromaHispanictradition,whichevolvedfurther,particularlyintheCentralStatesofMexico,JaliscoandMichoacán,wheretheMexicancowboywouldeventuallybeknownasacharro,aswellasareastothenorththatlaterbecametheSouthwesternUnitedStates.MostvaquerosweremenofmestizoandNativeAmericanoriginwhilemostofthehacendados(owners)wereethnicallySpanish.[9]
AsEnglish-speakingtradersandsettlersmovedintotheWesternUnitedStates,EnglishandSpanishtraditions,languageandculturemergedtosomedegree,withthevaquerotraditionprovidingthefoundationoftheAmericancowboy.BeforetheMexican-AmericanWarin1848,NewEnglandmerchantswhotraveledbyshiptoCaliforniaencounteredbothhacendadosandvaqueros,tradingmanufacturedgoodsforthehidesandtallowproducedfromvastcattleranches.AmericantradersalongwhatlaterbecameknownastheSantaFeTrailhadsimilarcontactswithvaquerolife.Startingwiththeseearlyencounters,thelifestyleandlingoofthevaquerobeganatransformationwhichmergedwithEnglishculturaltraditionsandproducedwhatbecameknowninAmericancultureasthecowboy.
