TheAmericanCivilWar(1861–1865)wasasectionalconflictintheUnitedStatesofAmericabetweenthefederalgovernment(theUnion)and11SouthernslavestatesthatdeclaredtheirsecessionandformedtheConfederateStatesofAmerica,ledbyPresidentJeffersonDavis.TheUnion,ledbyPresidentAbrahamLincolnandtheRepublicanParty,whichopposedexpansionofslavery,rejectedanyrightofsecession.FightingbeganApril12,1861whenConfederateforcesattackedaFederalfortattheBattleofFortSumter.

ThefullrestorationoftheUnionwastheworkofahighlycontentiouspostwareraknownasReconstruction.Thewarproducedmorethan970,000casualties(3%ofthepopulation),includingapproximately620,000soldierdeaths—⅔bydisease.Thecausesofthewar,thereasonsforitsoute,andeventhenameofthewaritselfaresubjectsoflingeringcontroversyeventoday.ThemainresultsofthewarweretherestorationandstrengtheningoftheUnion,andtheendofslaveryintheUnitedStates
