中国文化和美国家庭是不同的。重视对子女的教育是中国文化的特质，为了子女成龙成凤，中国父母会不惜牺牲一切，这是其它西方国家的父母望尘莫及的。但是也正是因为这个原因，中国父母喜欢主导子女的一生，总认为子女不争气就是父母的失败；而子女若能成材则是父母最大的荣耀。基于这份患得患失的忧心和企图，使得中国父母普遍对孩子过份保护、限制太多，并且强加其个人价值观于子女身上者屡见不鲜。

中国父母试图用“牺牲”的想法及作法来减少孩子在生存竞争上的挑战，希望孩子在低挑战的环境下，创造高成就，其实，这是不可能的事情，因为生存的能力是靠磨练出来的，光从书本上是很难学到的。中国父母常对孩子说：“你只要好好念书就好了，其他都别管了！”这种作法不但对孩子没有任何好处，更是严重地剥夺了他们学习生存及养成独立人格的成长机会，更将因此扭曲了孩子的一生。

美国的家庭教育崇尚民主.父母和孩子共同制定能维护各方面权益的规范.孩子在制定家规时与父母具有均等的权利.父母们常能宽容孩子们的顽皮.淘气.不太注意小节.他们的教育方式是开放的.美国的家庭教育的民主气氛造就了一代一代独立性极强的美国青年.但有时极端的民主也使美国不少家庭的教育过于放任.造成不少孩子以自我为中心.盛气凌人.行为顽劣.

美国的父母从小注意帮助孩子树产明确的经济观念和经济独立的意识.父母们教导孩子怎样有计划地消费有限的零用钱.如何想办法去赚钱.美国青年的经济独立意识较早.正是基于这种早期的经济观念的教育.在美国.父母们常用经济手段来促使孩子学习进步及刺激子女间的学习竞争.
