　　Inthepost-CivilWardaysof1865,ThomasClemsonlookeduponaSouththatlayineconomicruin,onceremarking,“Thiscountryisinwretchedcondition,nomoneyandnothingtosell.Everyoneisruined,andthosethatcanareleaving.”

　　ThomasClemson’sdeathonApril6,1888,setinmotionaseriesofeventsthatmarkedthestartofanewerainhighereducationinSouthCarolina.Inhiswill,hebequeathedtheFortHillplantationandaconsiderablesumfromhispersonalassetsfortheestablishmentofaneducationalinstitutionthatwouldteachscientificagricultureandthemechanicalartstoSouthCarolina’syoungpeople.
