　　TheUniversityofWesternAustralia(UWA)wasestablishedin1911astheState'sfirstuniversity.ItwasalsothefirstfreeuniversityintheBritishEmpire,activelypromotingequalaccesstotertiaryeducationforallsocialclasses.TheUniversitywasestablishedduelargelytotheeffortsofSirJohnWinthropHackett,whohadalong-standingvisionandpassiontoprovideWesternAustraliawithauniversity.ProprietorandeditorofTheWestAustraliannewspaper,hechairedaRoyalCommissionwhichrecommendedtheestablishmentofauniversity.LaterhewasthefoundingChancellorandbequeathedmorethan£425,000(theequivalentofmorethan$32milliontoday)totheUniversity.TherewasconsensusamonglegislatorsofthetimethattheUniversitynotonlybefree,butalsoprovidetertiaryeducationofapracticalnaturetohelpdevelopWesternAustralia'spioneeringeconomy.AtthetimeoftheUniversity'sfoundation,Perth'spopulationwasjust121,000anditseconomyreliedmostlyonagricultural,pastoralandminingindustries.Asaresult,thefoundingprofessorialappointmentswereinAgriculture,MiningandEngineering,Geology,MathematicsandPhysics,Chemistry,HistoryandEconomics,Biology,andEnglish.ThesewerebalancedtoanextentbytheappointmentoflecturersinClassicsandAncientHistory,French,German,MentalandMoralPhilosophy,andVeterinaryScience.Overarchingthese12postswerethreefaculties–Engineering,ScienceandArts.Morethan100yearslater,theUniversityisnowhometonineFacultiesandSchoolsandanumberofResearchInstitutionsandCentreswhichcelebratedtheUniversity'sCentenaryin2013.UWAalsoenteredtheinternationally-recognisedAcademicRankingofWorldUniversities'Top100listing,continuingtosetthestandardforotherWestAustralianuniversitiestofollowintermsofrecognitionforitsachievementsnationallyandinternationally.

　　Humblebeginnings

　　In1913,TheUniversityopeneditsdoorsto184students.TheyattendedbuildingswithtimberwallsandcorrugatedironroofsonatemporarysiteinIrwinStreet,inwhatisnowthePerthcentralbusinessdistrict.ThenumberofbuildingsatIrwinStreetgrewslowlytoaccommodatemorestudents.Onestructure–whichaccommodatedthebirthoftheLaborPartyofWesternAustralia–wastransportedfromCoolgardie,580kilometresnorth-eastofPerth.OverseeingtheUniversitywasan18memberUniversitySenate,andaVice-Chancellorappointedonarotatingbasisfromtheprofessors.TheStudentGuildwasalsoestablishedaspartofTheUniversityofWesternAustraliaAct1911asanindependent,autonomousbody.Highhopesforthefledglinguniversitywereputunderadarkcloudin1914withtheoutbreakoftheFirstWorldWar.Manystudentsandstaffvolunteeredformilitaryserviceandthelocaleconomywashitbadly,affectingitsabilitytofundtheUniversity.ButsignificantmilestonescontinuedtobemetwithEdwardSydneySimpson(1875–1939)becomingthefirststudenttograduatewithabachelor’sdegreefromUWAandthefirsttoearnaDoctorateofSciencein1919.

　　Oncethewarended,UWAdevelopedquickly.ThankstothegenerousbequestfromSirWinthropHackett'sestate,buildingbeganin1929ona51-hectaresiteinCrawley,aboutfivekilometreswestofPerth.Thegrand,Mediterranean-styleWinthropHallwithitsimposingclocktower,HackettHallandadministrationbuildingswerecompletedin1932.Thegothic-styleStGeorgesCollege–theUniversity'sfirststudentresidence–wasalsobuiltwithfundsfromthebequestandcompletedin1931.ThemovefromIrwinStreettoCrawleystartedin1925andwascompleteby1932.TheIrwinStreetbuildingsweremovedtothecurrentsite,oneofwhichremainsinoperationtodayaccommodatingtheConvocationCouncilRoom,theUniversity'sarchivescentreandcricketclubpavilion.UsingfundsraisedbyConvocationfromtheUniversity'sgraduates,itwasfullyrestoredandreopenedin1988asConvocation'sgifttocelebratetheUniversity's75thanniversary,andnowsitsontheedgeofJamesOval,servingasoneofthemanycampuslandmarks.In1927,ProfessorH.E.WhitfeldbecamethefirstpermanentVice-Chancellor.LawhadbecometheUniversity'sfourthfacultyin1927and,by1930,studentenrolmentshadreachedmorethan600.

　　Darktimes

　　TheGreatDepression,beginningin1929,andtheSecondWorldWar,1939-1945,againfrozedevelopmentattheUniversity.TheexceptionwastheseparationofAgriculturefromSciencetoformanewfacultyin1936.ThroughtieswiththenewlyformedInstituteofAgriculture,theFacultyofAgriculturewastobecomehometoresearchlaboratoriesfortheCouncilforScientificandIndustrialResearchformanyyears.ThefacultyhasdevelopedtodayintothebestofitskindinAustraliaandamongthetop50intheworld.Severaliconsofthestudentbodywerebornduringthisperiod:theartmagazine,Pelican,andsatiricalone-daystudentnewspaper,SRUSS-SRUSS,precursorofPROSH.Withtheoutbreakofwar,theUniversitybecamehometo200USNavypersonnelwhoservedtheCatalinaflyingbaseatCrawley.

　　Post-warrecovery

　　ShortlyaftertheSecondWorldWar,theUniversitystartedtoregainmomentumwithstudentnumbersreaching1000.Unprecedentedenrolmentgrowthfromthemid-1950stothe1960swasthankstoaboomingeconomyandaspikeindemandforuniversityeducation.GovernmentswereencouragedtosupporttheUniversityasabetter-educatedworkforcewasseenasoneofthekeystoachievingindustrialdevelopment.Toensurehighereducationwasgivenpriority,theFederalGovernmentassumedresponsibilityforfundingalluniversities.UWAfinallyhadthemoneyitrequiredtofulfilitslong-termobjectives.Thepost-warbabyboomhadalsocreatedalargerandyoungerpopulationthatwasenjoyingahighstandardoflivingandbettersecondaryeducation.Asaresult,moreyoungpeoplewerenotonlyeligibletoentertheUniversity,buttheyalsowantedadegreetoimprovetheiropportunities.Studentnumbersgrewto2000by1956andalmostdoubledto3800by1962,including166enrolmentsformaster'sdegreesand99fordoctorates.Withmorestudentscameadramaticincreaseinacademicstaff,leapingfrom91in1953to247in1966.Anotherfourfacultieswerecreatedby1956,bringingthetotaltonine.InadditiontoArts,Law,Engineering,AgricultureandScience:EducationseparatedfromArtsin1947.EconomicssplitfromArtsin1954.FacultyofDentistrywascreatedin1946.FacultyofMedicinewasfoundedin1956.

　　Newchallenges

　　Enrolmentsgrewto10,195in1975andstartedtaperingoffin1976asCommonwealthfundingandstudentquotaswerecutacrossAustralia.FundingforUWAwasalsodivertedtofinanceUWA'sfirstmajorcompetitor,thenewlycreatedMurdochUniversity.WiththeentryofseveralothertertiaryinstitutionsintoPerthduringthe1960sand1970s,UWAwasnolongerexpectedtobethesoledelivererofhighereducationinWesternAustralia.Consequently,theUniversitywasabletobemorespecificinitsgoalsandprioritiesthanithadinthepast.Atthesametime,ithadtomeetthechangingneedsoftheWesternAustraliancommunity,whichhadbecomemoreaffluentandindustrialised.Significantgrowthhadalsooccurredinmining,commercialandfinancialsectorsaswellasthepublicservice.Overthenexttwodecadesenrolmentsslowlyclimbedto12,791in1994andthenbegantoincreasemorerapidlyto21,091in2009.In2012thereweremorethan24,000studentsenrolled.2012wasayearofsignificantchangefortheUniversitywiththeintroductionofanewcoursestructure.Themodelofbroadundergraduatestudiesfollowedbyapostgraduateprofessionalqualificationisinlinewithleadinguniversitiesacrosstheworldandhasbeendesignedtoproducewell-roundedgraduates,aswellasprovidemultipleentryopportunitiesforawiderangeofstudents.

　　In2013,acalendarofspecialeventsbroughtUWAstaffandstudents,bothpastandpresent,andthewidercommunitytogetheroncampustocelebrate100yearsofachievements.Asapartofthesecelebrations,adetailedexplorationofthehistoryoftheUniversitywaspublished:SeekingWisdom,AcentenaryhistoryofTheUniversityofWesternAustralia,editedbyUWAhistorianJennyGregory.
