JohnHancockwas,forallintentsandpurposes,thefirstPresidentoftheconfederacyfrom1776through1781.JohnHancockwasoneofthefirsttruepatriotswholedthefightforindependencefromthecrown.ItisforgoodreasonthathissignaturecomesfirstontheDeclarationofIndependence.HeledtherevolutioninBostonandfoughtagainstthecrownaheadofallotherpatriots.KingGeorgewantedJohn'sheadfromtheverymomenttheDeclarationwasdeliveredtotheKing.Oncetherevolutionwaswon,allmembersofthenewcongressfinallysignedtheirnamestotheDeclarationofIndependencein1771,andall13statesratifiedthenewConfederacyin1781.

OnceLordCornwallissurrenderedin1781,ThomasMcKeanbecametheelectedPresidentofCongress.From1781through1789,PresidentsJohnHanson,EliasBoudinot,ThomasMifflin,RichardLee,JohnHancock,NathanielGorham,ArthurSt.Clair,andCyrusGriffin,allservedterms.Finally,GeorgeWashingtonwaselectedin1789.Byallaccounts,GeorgeWashingtonwasthecertainlythefirstPresidentwhobroughttheStatestogetherasaunitedcountry.
GeorgeWashington'slifeleadinguptohispresidencywasinteresting.Heimpressedpeoplearoundhim,notwithgreatspeakingabilityorcharisma,butwithhisgoodsenseandpatrioticviews.HestartedhismilitarycareerasayoungmanontheFrontier.HefoughtwithFrenchsoldiersatthestartoftheFrenchandIndianWar.AfterbravelyleadingtheBritishtosafetyafterabattleinVirginia,WashingtonwaspromotedtocommandVirginia'smilitary.AfterwinningvariousbattlesandbringingpeacetoOhio,attwenty-sevenyearsold,hemarriedMarthaDandridgeCustis,andretiredtoaplantationonMountVernon.Afterfarmingforanumberofyears,in1775whenhewentfromservingintheContinentalCongresstoonceagaincommandinganarmy,butthistimeitwastheContinentalArmyagainsttheBritishinBoston.
AfteranumberofcrushingdefeatsbeforeWashington'stroopscrossedtheDelaware,WashingtonturnedhistroopsaroundonChristmasnightof1776,inoneofthegreatestmilitaryoperationsinAmericanhistory.Onthatnight,Washington'stroopscrossedbackovertheDelawareandoverpoweredthegarrisonatTrenton,andsubsequentlyovertookthegarrisonatPrincetonaswell.AftergainingCornwallis'surrenderinYorktown,theRevolutionarywarwaswon.Onceagain,WashingtonretiredtohisplantationonMountVernon.

Washingtonwatchedpublicaffairswithdismay,astheunionwasweakenedwithdebtsfromthewar,inabilitytocollectrevenue,andoverallimpotenceoftheConfederationCongress.WashingtonwrotetoJamesMadisonthatCongressneededapowerfulConstitution.In1787,WashingtonwenttoPhiladelphiatoattendtheconventionsetuptomodifytheArticlesofConfederation.AftertheConstitutionwasapproved,thefirstpresidentialelectionwasheld,anddespitehisdesiretoretireonceagaintoMountVernon,hereceivedavotefromeverysinglevoter.GeorgeWashingtonremainstheonlypresidentinU.S.historywhohasbeenvotedforpresidentunanimouslybythepeople.
