1.Introduction

XiamenUniversity,locatedinXiamen,Fujianprovince,isthefirstuniversityinChinafoundedbyoverseasChinese.Before1949,itwasoriginallyknownastheUniversityofAmoy.TheuniversityisoneofmanycomprehensiveuniversitiesdirectlyadministeredbytheChineseMinistryofEducation.In1995itwasincludedinthelistofthe211Projectforthestatekeyconstruction;in2000itbecameoneofChina’shigher-leveluniversitiesdesignatedforthestatekeyconstructionofthe985Project.

In1919,Mr.Tankahkee,thewell-knownoverseasChineseleader,donatedmillionsofdollarstoestablishandendowXiamenUniversity,officiallyfoundedin1921.ItisregardedasoneofthemostprestigiousandselectiveuniversitiesinChina.

Mr.TanhandedoverXiamenUniversitytothegovernmentin1937duetolackoffunds,andtheinstitutionsubsequentlybecameanationaluniversity.

In1938,attheoutbreakoftheSecondSino-JapaneseWar,theuniversitytemporaryrelocatedtoChangtinginMinXicounty,westernFujian.

AttheendofWorldWarIIin1946,XiamenUniversitymovedbacktoXiamenandresumednormaloperations.

In1952,XiamenUniversitybecameacomprehensiveuniversity,andhasbeendesignatedasanationalkeyuniversitysince1962.Then,in1952itbecameacomprehensiveuniversityembracingbothartsandscience.In1963,itwasdesignatedasastatekeyuniversity.In1995,itwasincludedinthelistofthe211Projectforthestatekeyconstruction;in2000,itbecameoneofChina’shigher-leveluniversitiesdesignatedforthestatekeyconstructionofthe985Project.
