Onofthestudents,surnamedXu,setupaplantoexposethepyramidsellingringinsouthwesternChongqingafterhewascoercedintotheringinFebruary.Xuandtwofriendsrecordedtheinformationofothercheatedstudentsduringtraininglecturesorganizedbytheleadingsuspects.

Itwasthisinformationthathelpedpolicebreakuptheringandsendthecheatedstudentshome,thepapersaid.

GuangzhoupolicewarnedcollegestudentstoguardagainststrangersposingasstudentsfromBeijingUniversityafteranumberofstudentswereswindledoutofthousandsofyuanrecently,theNewExpressreportedWednesday.

AtleastthreecaseshadbeenreportedtopolicewhereswindlersposingasstudentsfromBeijingUniversity,oneofthemostprestigiousinChina,hadcheatedGuangzhoustudentsoutofvarioussumsofmoney,policesaid.

OnNov.11lastyear,aGuangzhoucollegestudentmetthreestrangerswhosaidtheywerefromBeijingUniversity.TheytoldhimtheyhadbecomelostinGuangzhouwhileconductingresearchandcouldnotfindtheirteacher.TheysaidtheyneededasumofmoneyurgentlytofaxsomeimportantmaterialbacktoBeijingUniversity.

TheGuangzhoustudentloanedthem1,700yuan(US$205)incashandgavethemhisbankcard.

ButthestrangersneverreturnedandtheGuangzhoustudentlaterfoundadditional7,800yuanmissingfromhisbankcardaccount.

Intheothertwocases,twocollegestudentsalsofellvictimtostrangerswhoclaimedtobestudentsfromBeijingUniversity,losingatleast7,000yuaneach.

BeijingUniversitywasconsideredoneofthetopuniversitiesinChina,andmanyGuangzhoucollegestudents,especiallyfreshmen,admiredstudentsfromtheprestigiousuniversityandweretooeagertomakefriendswiththem,policesaid.
