TheUniversity'straditionalholdingsofmorethan15.8millionvolumesarerootedinthe1638bequestof400booksfromJohnHarvard.ThecoreoftheUniversity'scollectionsisfoundinWidenerLibrary—whichisundertheaegisoftheFacultyofArtsandSciences(FAS)andisacknowledgedtobetheUniversity'sflagshiplibrary.Today,Harvardhasmorethan80librariesgatheredintoasinglesystemthatconstitutesthelargestacademiclibraryintheworld.Widelyrecognizedasthelargestacademiclibraryinexistence,theHarvardUniversityLibraryisinadistinctclasswiththegreatestlibrariesintheworld:theLibraryofCongress,theBritishLibrary,theNewYorkPublicLibrary,andtheBibliothèqueNationaledeFrance.

TheHarvardUniversityLibrary,then,isasystemoflibrariesthatprovidescomprehensiveaccesstoHarvard'slibraryholdingsacrosstheboundariesofindividualfacultiesanddisciplines.

Inanothersense,theHarvardUniversityLibraryisadepartmentoftheUniversity'sCentralAdministrationthatreportstothepresident.KnownasHUL,thisdistinctdepartmentisheadedbytheseniorfacultymemberwhoholdsthetitleofCarlH.PforzheimerUniversityProfessorandDirectoroftheUniversityLibrary.InadditiontoservingastheheadofHUL,thedirectorinterpretsthetechnicalandorganizationalchallengesofthelibrarysystemtothepresidentandservesaschiefstewardofthecollectionsfortheHarvardCorporation.
