Althoughitwasn'tcelebratedintheU.S.until1907,thereweredayshonoringmotherseveninthedaysofancientGreece.Inthosedays,however,itwasRhea,theMotherofthegodsthatwasgivenhonor.

Later,inthe1600's,inEnglandtherewasanannualobservancecalledMotheringSunday.ItwascelebratedduringJune,onthefourthSunday.OnMotheringSunday,theservants,whogenerallylivedwiththeiremployers,wereencouragedtoreturnhomeandhonortheirmothers.Itwastraditionalforthemtobringaspecialcakealongtocelebratetheoccasion.

IntheU.S.,in1907AnaJarvis,fromPhiladelphia,beganacampaigntoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Jarvispersuadedhermother'schurchinGrafton,WestVirginiatocelebrateMother'sDayonthesecondanniversaryofhermother'sdeath,the2ndSundayofMay.ThenextyearMother'sDaywasalsocelebratedinPhiladelphia.

Jarvisandothersbeganaletter-writingcampaigntoministers,businessmen,andpoliticiansintheirquesttoestablishanationalMother'sDay.Theyweresuccessful.PresidentWoodrowWilson,in1914,madetheofficialannouncementproclaimingMother'sDayanationalobservancethatwastobeheldeachyearonthe2ndSundayofMay.

ManyothercountriesoftheworldcelebratetheirownMother'sDayatdifferenttimesthroughouttheyear.Denmark,Finland,Italy,Turkey,Australia,andBelgiumcelebrateMother'sDayonthesecondSundayinMay,asintheU.S.
