TheHumboldtUniversityofBerlin(German:Humboldt-UniversitätzuBerlin,HUBerlin)isoneofBerlin'soldestuniversities,foundedon15October1810astheUniversityofBerlin(UniversitätzuBerlin)bytheliberalPrussianeducationalreformerandlinguistWilhelmvonHumboldt,whoseuniversitymodelhasstronglyinfluencedotherEuropeanandWesternuniversities.From1828itwasknownastheFrederickWilliamUniversity(Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität),andlater(unofficially)alsoastheUniversitätunterdenLindenafteritslocationintheformerpalaceofPrinceHenryofPrussia(1726–1802)whichhisbrother,KingFrederickII,hadbuiltforhimbetween1748and1753ontheavenueUnterdenLinden.In1949,itchangeditsnametoHumboldt-UniversitätinhonourofbothitsfounderWilhelmandhisbrother,geographerAlexandervonHumboldt.In2012,theHumboldtUniversityofBerlinwasoneofelevenGermanuniversitiestowinintheGermanUniversitiesExcellenceInitiative,anationalcompetitionforuniversitiesorganizedbytheGermanFederalGovernment.Theuniversityhaseducated29NobelPrizewinnersandisconsideredoneofthemostprestigiousuniversitiesinEuropeoverall[6]aswellasoneofthemostprestigiousuniversitiesworldwideforartsandhumanities.
