TheancientcommercialpassagefirstappearedduringtheTangDynasty(618-907).ItalsoexperiencedtheSong,Yuan,MingandQingdynasties-oraperiodofmorethan1,200years.Theroadpromotedexchangesincultureandreligion,andsawethnicmigrationthatcloselyresembledwhatwasexperiencedonthewell-knownSilkRoad.

Alongtheancientroadlivedmorethan20minorities.Concentrationsofbeautifulandmysteriousnaturallandscapesandtraditionalculturesdevelopedinvarioussites,includingDalioldcity,Lijiangoldcity,Shangrila,YarlungZangboRiverGrandCanyon,PotalaPalace.Theroadfeaturestemples,rockpaintings,posthouses,ancientbridgesandplankroads.Itisalsohometomanynationalminoritiesandtheirdancesandfolkcustoms.
