Yunnan(simplifiedChinese:云南)isaprovinceofthePeople'sRepublicofChina,locatedinthefarsouthwestofthecountryspanningapproximately394,000squarekilometers(152,000squaremiles)andwithapopulationof45.7million(2009).ThecapitaloftheprovinceisKunming.TheprovincebordersBurma,Laos,andVietnam.

Yunnanissituatedinamountainousarea,withhighelevationsinthenorthwestandlowelevationsinthesoutheast.Mostofthepopulationlivesintheeasternpartoftheprovince.Inthewest,therelativeheightfrommountainpeakstorivervalleyscanbeasmuchas3,000m.YunnanisrichinnaturalresourcesandhasthelargestdiversityofplantlifeinChina.Oftheapproximately30,000speciesofhigherplantsinChina,Yunnanhasperhaps17,000ormore.Yunnan'sreservesofaluminium,lead,zincandtinarethelargestinChina,andtherearealsomajorreservesofcopperandnickel.Yunnanhasover600riversandlakes,whichprovideanannualwatersupplyof222billioncubicmeters.Projectedhydropowerreservesstandat103GW,withanexploitablecapacityof90GW.

YunnanbecamepartoftheHanDynasty(206BC-220AD)during2ndcenturyBC.ItbecametheseatofaTibeto-BurmanspeakingkingdomknownasKingdomofNanzhaointhe8thcenturyAD.Nanzhaowasmulti-ethnic,buttheelitemostlikelyspokeanortherndialectofYi,whichbecameestablishedastheprestigedialect(seeNuosulanguage).TheMongolsconqueredtheregioninthe13thcentury,withlocalcontrolexercisedbywarlordsuntilthe1930s.AswithotherpartsofChina'ssouthwest,JapaneseoccupationinthenorthduringWorldWarIIforcedamigrationofmajorityHanpeopleintotheregion.EthnicminoritiesinYunnanaccountforabout34percentofitstotalpopulation.MajorethnicgroupsincludeYi,Bai,Hani,Zhuang,DaiandMiao.
