Dickens'sworkwasverypopularwiththereadingpublicwhenitwasfirstpublished.OnereviewinthemagazineAthenaeumstatedthatATaleofTwoCitieshadattractedthepraiseofahundredthousandreaders.Ontheotherhand,awholesetofcritics,mostnotablySirJamesFitzjamesStephenwritinginSaturdayReview,criticizedthenovelpreciselyforitspopularity.Mostofthecriticswritingintheintellectualandliteraryjournalsofthedayconsideredpopularsuccessagoodreasontocondemnawork,explainsGlancy.Ifthepubliclikedit,theycertainlycouldnotbeseentoapproveofitatall.Moderncriticalopinion,however,hasgiventhenovelanimportantplaceamongDickens'smostmatureworksoffiction.
