Originallytherewere15windmillswithintheolddefensivewallsofDelft,butonlyonesurvivestoday.ThisiscalledMolenDeRoos(TheRoseWindmill).ItislocatedashortwalkfromtheOudeKerk(OldChurch).Itwasusedforgrindinggrainforbakersandbarley,oatsandcornforfarmers.Itneededextensiverestorationworkbetween1988and1990,butisnowbackinfullworkingorder.Whenitisopentovisitorsablueflagfliesfromthetopofthewindmill.Thereisnoentrancecharge,butvoluntarydonationshelptheVerenigingDeHollandscheMolen(TheDutchWindmillAssociation)tomaintainthebuilding.

Hollandisfamousforitswindmills,sonoonewillbesurprisedtolearnthattheworld’stallestwindmillsaretobefoundhere.However,fewDutch,letalonetourists,willbeabletotellyouwheretheystand.Andpeoplemightnotevenbelieveitwhentoldthattheyarenotoutinthefields,butinheartofthemostdenselypopulatedareasontheglobe,nearthesecondlargestportintheworld.

SchiedamliestothewestofRotterdam,fromwhereitiseasilyreachedbypublictransport.Surroundedby20th-centurycommercialandresidentialareasisthesmallyetcharming18thcenturytowncenter,lookinglikeapocket-sizeAmsterdam.AtthewesternedgeofSchiedam’soldcenter,linedupalongtheformeroutercanal,standtheworld’sfivetallestwindmills.

Whenthewindmillswerebuilt,between1770and1803,theystoodinwhatwasthentheedgeoftownandtheindustrialarea.Theywerebuiltforthegrindingofgrainneededforthedistillationofgin,thenSchiedam’smainindustry.Tocatchasmuchwindaspossible,theyweremadetostandhighabovethecity,whichcametolieattheirfeet.

Inthosedaysthecanalwasamoat,andtheothersideofthemoatonlyflatfarmland.Thatareastartedbeingbuiltearlyinthe20thcentury,andnowitisasemi-urbanareaoflittlearchitecturaldistinction.Theresultofthisdevelopmentforthewindmillsisthattheyarenowsurroundedbybuildingsandarepartoftheurbanlandscape.Thehighestwindmillsintheworldstandinthemiddleoftown.

Thesefivewindmillsarewhatremainofanoriginaltwenty,theothershavingbeenmaderedundantbysteamengines.In1880,thosetwentymillsgroundgrainforthenearly400distilleriesthatmadethefamousjeneverofSchiedam,wheremoreginwasproducedthaninanyothercityintheworld.Schiedamcannolongermakethatclaim,buttwoofthefiveremainingwindmillsdostillgrindgrainforthejeneverindustry.Thebladesoftheotherthreewindmillsstillturnaswell,butonlyforshow.Threeofthefivecanbevisitedtoseetheinterior:onehousesashop,oneamuseumandthethirdarestaurant.

In1981theSchiedamWindmillsSocietywasfounded.TheSociety’saimistoassistintheoperationandmaintenanceoftheseuniquewindmills,whichhadpreviouslybeenbadlyneglected.IncelebrationoftheSociety’s25thanniversary,onApril28and29thebladesofallfivewindmillswillturnnon-stopfor25hours.
