　　JokhangTempleisthespiritualcenterofTibet.EverydaypilgrimsfromeverycornerofTibettrekalongdistancetothetemple.Someofthemevenprogressprostratebybodylengthtothethresholdofthetemple.Pilgrimsfuelmyriadofflickeringbutterlampswithyakbutter,orhonortheirdeitieswithwhitescarves(Kha-btagsorHada)whilemurmuringsacredmantrastoshowtheirpietiestotheBuddha.

　　ItliesatthecenteroftheoldLhasa.Builtin647bySongtsenGampoandhistwoforeignwives,ithasahistoryofmorethan1,300.ItwassaidthatNepalPrincessTritsundecidedtobuildatempletohousetheJowoSakyamuniaged12broughtbyChinesePrincessWencheng.PrincessWenchengreckonedaccordingtoChineseastrologythatthetempleshouldbebuiltonthepoolwheretheJokhangnowlocates.Shecontendedthatthepoolwasawitch'sheart,sothetempleshouldbebuiltonthepooltogetridofevils.Thepoolstillexistsunderthetemple.Thengoatswereusedasthemainpackanimals,asisthereasonthecityiscalledLhasa.Theconstructiontook12months.Howeveritwasoriginallysmallandhadbeenexpandedtotoday'sscaleinlaterdynasties.WhentheFifth打来Lamatookreign,large-scalereconstructionandrenovationhadbeendone.ThetempleisacombinationofHan,TibetanandNepalesearchitecturaltechniques.Visitorswillseesphinxandotherweirdandsacredsculptures.

　　Thetemplekeepsmanyinvaluableculturalrelics.ThemostfamousandvaluableoneistheJowoSakyamuniaged12,whichiscircumambulatedbythousandsofpilgrimsdayandnight.Onhissides,therearealtarsofSongtsenGampoandhistwowiveswhointroducedBuddhismintoTibet.Themuralsinthemainhallarealsoworthseeing,depictingtheprocessionofPrincessWenchengarrivinginTibetandthebuildingoftheJokhangTemplewhileothermuralstellJatakastories.TwothangkasimagingYamantakaandChakrasamvarafromtheMingdynasty(1368-1644)stillremaininperfectcondition.Thegoldbumpa(avase)uponwhichthereincarnationsof打来LamaandPanchenLamaaredecided,musicalinstrumentsbroughtintoTibetbyWenchengandotherimportantstuffsarealsokepthere.

　　Everyyear,theGreatPrayerFestivalwillbeheldintheTemple.Theritesof打来LamasandPanchenLamas'initiationintolamahoodarealsoheldinthemonastery.
