InsteadoftalkingaboutthethingsIlearnedatEmpireStateCollege,I’dliketotellyouaboutthethingsIunlearnedasastudent.ThefounderoftheVisacorporation,DeeHock,mayhavesaiditbest,Theproblemisneverhowtogetnew,innovativeideasintoyourmind,buthowtogettheoldideasout.Threeobsoletebeliefskeptmefrompursuingmybachelor’sdegreeformanyyears.Theywerethat(1)earningacollegedegreemeantchoosingalife-longprofession,(2)thatIwasthekindofpersonwhocouldonlylearnsittinginaclassroom,and(3)thathavingafamilyandfull-timejobmeanttherewasnotimeforcollege.

Twentyyearsago,Ihadtheopportunitytoattendcollegerightafterhighschool.ButIdidn’tgo.Iwas18and,likeall18yearolds,Ikneweverything,Ididn’tknowwhatIwantedtodowiththerestofmylifeandIwasafraidthatacollegedegreewouldlockmeintoacareerthatImightnotwantlater.Somuchforknowingeverything!Iwasafraidthatacollegeeducationwouldlockmein,whenearningthisdegreehasunlockeddoorsthatIneverknewexisted.Notonlycareeropportunities,butwholerealmsofthought.ThewaythatIlookedattheworldchanged...aswellasthewaythatIsawmyself.Thankyou,MargaretMary,forchallengingmetotakeachanceonmyselfandsettingmyfeetonthispath.

WhenIenrolledatEmpireStateCollege,Istillhadsomedoubts.Ithought,I’mtoooldforthis...Ican’tdothisontopofeverythingelse!AndIfoundthat,ifyousaythisinfrontofotherpeople,theywillagreewithyou.Yes,youaretooold!Theysay,Icouldneverdoit.Andsomehowyouhearthesubtlemessagethatmaybeyoucan’tdoiteither.

Butthoseofusgraduatingtoday,weknowtheothersideofthatthought.Littlebylittle,paperbypaper,coursebycourse...wefindweAREdoingit.Ontopofeverythingelse...inadditiontotheotherrolesthatweplay...wehavecarvedoutthisroleforourselves:wearecollegestudents.Andtodaywejointhelonglineofcollegegraduates.

Sothankyouallforbeingheretoday.Youroftenunseen,butveryrealpresenceonmyacademicjourneymadethisdaypossibleformeandI’mprofoundlygrateful.
