SoongChing-ling

SoongChing-ling,orMadameSunYat-sen,theonewholovedChinaSoongCh'ing-ling(SimplifiedChinese:宋庆龄(January27,1892–May29,1981)wasoneoftheSoongsisters—threesisterswhosehusbandswereamongstChina'smostsignificantpoliticalfiguresoftheearly20thcentury.AlsoknownasMadameSunYat-sen,shewasdescribedastheonewholovedChina.HerChristiannamewasRosamond.

ShewasborntothewealthybusinessmanandmissionaryCharlieSoonginKunshan,Jiangsu,attendedMotyeireSchoolforGirlsinShanghai,andgraduatedfromWesleyanCollegeinMacon,Georgia,UnitedStates.

ShemarriedSunYat-seninJapanonOctober25,1915afterhedivorcedLuMuzhen.Ching-ling'sparentsgreatlyopposedthemarriage,asDr.Sunwas26yearshersenior.AfterSun'sdeathin1925,shewaselectedtotheKuomintang(KMT)CentralExecutiveCommitteein1926.However,sheexiledherselftoMoscowaftertheexpulsionoftheCommunistsfromtheKMTin1927.

AlthoughshereconciledwiththeKMTduringtheSino-JapaneseWar(1937-1945),shesidedwiththeCommunistsintheChineseCivilWar.ShedidnotjointhepartybutratherwaspartoftheunitedfrontheadinguptheRevolutionaryCommitteeoftheKuomintang.

SongQinglingaccompaniedSunYat-senin1924onhisfinaltriptoBeijing.in1939,shefoundedtheChinaWelfareInstitute(formerChinaDefenseLeague)inHongKong.

ShesetupthemagazineChinaToday(formerChinaReconstructs)in1949withthehelpofIsraelEpstein.Thismagazineispublishedmonthlyin6languages(Chinese,English,French,German,ArabicandSpanish).

AftertheestablishmentofthePeople'sRepublicofChina,shebecametheViceChairofthePeople'sRepublicofChina(nowtranslatedasVicePresident),HeadoftheSino-SovietFriendshipAssociationandHonoraryPresidentoftheAll-ChinaWomen'sFederation.In1951shewasawardedtheStalinPeacePrize,andin1953acollectionofherwritings,StruggleforNewChina,waspublished.From1968to1972sheactedjointlywithDongBiwuasheadofstate.

AccordingtoJungChang'sandJonHalliday'sbiographyofSoongChing-ling,MadameSun'shomewasoneofthefewplacesifnottheonlyplacetooffermacaroniandcheeseinCommunistChinaduringitsisolationfromthe1950sto70s.

OnMay16,1981,twoweeksbeforeherdeath,shewasadmittedtotheCommunistPartyandwasnamedHonoraryPresidentofthePeople'sRepublicofChina.

UnlikeheryoungersisterSoongMay-ling,whosidedwithherhusbandChiangKai-shekandfledtoTaiwan,SoongChing-lingisgreatlyreveredinmainlandChina.
