Mother'sDaywasfirstsuggestedintheUnitedStatesin1872byJuliaWardHoweasadaydedicatedtopeace.AcampaigntoestablishaNationalMothersDaywasbegunin1907.Itwassuccessful,by1911Mother'sDaywascelebratedinalmosteverystateinrecognitionoftheinfluencemothershaveinthemakingofbettercitizens.

In1914,PresidentWoodrowWilsonproclaimedthatthebirthdayofMrs.AnnaReevesJarvis,themotherofMother'sDay,wouldbecometheNationalMother'sDayoftheUnitedStates.Andthatfromthenon,thesecondSundayinMaywouldbeMothersDayinmemoryoftheworkMrs.JarvishaddonetobringfamiliestogetheraftertheCivilwar,herworktobringthewholeNorthandSouthtogether,herworktohonorallthemothersofAmericathroughouthistoryandonintothefuture,butmostofalltohonorMrs.AnnaReevesJarvisasAmericasNationalMother.

PresidentWilsonaskedthattheAmericanpeopleflytheUnitedStatesflagfrompublicbuildingsandhomesonthatdayashesaid,asapublicexpressionofourloveandreverenceforthemothersofourcountry.
