埃及亚历山大图书馆TheRoyalLibraryofAlexandria,orAncientLibraryofAlexandria,inAlexandria,Egypt,seemstohavebeenthelargestandmostsignificantgreatlibraryoftheancientworld.ItflourishedunderthepatronageofthePtolemaicdynastyandfunctionedasamajorcenterofscholarshipfromitsconstructioninthethirdcenturyB.C.E.untiltheRomanconquestofEgyptin48B.C.E.Subsequenttoitsdestruction,scholarsusedarelatedlibrarycalledtheSerapeum,locatedinanotherpartofthecity,foundedonthecollectionofPergamus,whichwasgiftedbyMarcAnthonytoCleopatra.ThislibrarywasdescribedasthedaughterlibraryandwasalsoatempletothegodSerapis.[1]ThelibrarywasconceivedandopenedeitherduringthereignofPtolemyISoter(323-283BCE)orduringthereignofhissonPtolemyII(283-246BCE).Plutarch(CE46–120)wrotethatduringhisvisittoAlexandriain48BCE,JuliusCaesaraccidentallyburnedthelibrarydownwhenhesetfiretohisownshipstofrustrateAchillas'attempttolimithisabilitytocommunicatebysea.[2]EdwardGibbondescribeshowthedaughterlibrarywasalsodestroyedbyTheophilus,BishopofAlexandria,whoorderedthedestructionoftheSerapeumin391.[1]Intendedbothasacommemorationandanemulationoftheoriginal,theBibliothecaAlexandrinawasinauguratedin2002nearthesiteoftheoldlibrary.

TheNationalLibraryofFrancetracesitsorigintotheroyallibraryfoundedattheLouvrebyCharlesVin1368.ItexpandedunderLouisXIVandopenedtothepublicin1692.Thelibrary'scollectionsswelledtoover300,000volumesduringtheradicalphaseoftheFrenchRevolutionwhentheprivatelibrariesofaristocratsandclergywereseized.FollowingaseriesofregimechangesinFrance,itbecametheImperialNationalLibraryandin1868wasmovedtonewlyconstructedbuildingsontheRuedeRichelieudesignedbyHenriLabrouste.UponLabrouste'sdeathin1875thelibrarywasfurtherexpanded,includingthegrandstaircaseandtheOvalRoom,byacademicarchitectJean-LouisPascal.By1896,thelibraryhadbecomethelargestrepositoryofbooksintheworld,althoughithassincebeensurpassedbyotherlibrariesforthattitle.
