Thefirststoryline,setintheSevenKingdomsthemselves,chroniclesamany-sidedstrugglefortheIronThronethatdevelopsafterKingRobert'sdeath.ThethroneisclaimedbyhissonJoffrey,supportedbyhismother'spowerfulfamily,HouseLannister,butRobert'sbrotherStannisclaims(correctly)thatRobert'schildrenareillegitimate,andclaimsthethronehimself,toaless-than-enthusiasticresponse.Robert'syoungestbrother,Renly,alsoclaimsthethronewiththesupportoftheextremelypowerfulHouseTyrell.Whilstthesethreeclaimantsbattleforthethroneitself,RobbStark,LordEddardStark'sheir,isproclaimedKingintheNorthasthenorthmenandtheiralliesintheRiverlandsseektobreakawayfromtheIronThroneandrulethemselves.Similarly,BalonGreyjoyalsoclaimsthethroneofhisownregion,theIronIslands,andlikewiseseeksindependence.TheWaroftheFiveKingsistheprincipalstorylineinthesecondandthirdnovels,withitsfall-outandrepercussionsaffectingmuchofwhatfollows.

ThesecondstorylineissetontheextremenorthernborderofWesteros.Here,eightthousandyearsago,ahugewalloficeandgravelwasconstructedbyspellsandbyhandtodefendWesterosfromthethreatof'TheOthers',asemi-mythicalraceoficecreatureslivingintheuttermostnorth.The300-mile-long,700-foot-tallWallisdefendedbytheSwornBrotherhoodoftheNight'sWatch,whichbythetimeofthenovelsisbadlyunder-strengthandunderthreatbythehuman'wildlings'or'freefolk'wholivetothenorth.ThisstorylinestrandfollowsJonSnow,bastardsonofLordEddardStark,asherisesthroughtheranksoftheWatchandlearnsthetruenatureofthethreatfromthenorth.Bytheendofthethirdvolume,thisstorylinehasbecomemoreentangledwiththecivilwartothesouthaswell.

ThethirdstorylineissetonthehugeeasterncontinentandfollowstheadventuresofDaenerysTargaryen,thelast(known)scionofHouseTargaryenandanotherclaimanttotheIronThrone.Daenerys'sstoryshowshergrowingrisetopower,fromanear-pennilesswanderertoapowerfulandcannyrulerwhopossessesthelastlivingdragons.Thoughherstoryisseparatedfromtheothersbymanythousandsofmiles,herstatedgoalistoreclaimtheIronThrone.AlthoughsheisnotknowntomanyinWesteros,thechaosoftwocivilwarsinrapidsuccessionhasledtomuchyearningamongthesmallfolkforthedaysofstabilityundertheTargaryens.Daenerys'storylinewillreturnhertoWesterosbeforetheendoftheseries.

TheeponymousSongofIceandFireismentionedonlyonceintheseries,inavisionDaenerysseesinAClashofKings:Heistheprincethatwaspromised,andhisisthesongoficeandfire,spokenbyaTargaryen(probablyDaenerys'sdeadolderbrotherRhaegarTargaryen)abouthisinfantsonnamedAegon.Itisimpliedthatthereisaconnectionbetweenthesong,thepromise,andDaenerysherself.ThisisestablishedmoreclearlyinAFeastforCrows,whenAemonTargaryenidentifiesDaenerysastheheirthatwaspromised.ThephraseiceandfireisalsomentionedintheReeds'oathofloyaltytoBraninAClashofKings.However,thesongandthepromisearenevermentionedagain,andthesongitselfremainsamystery.
