Hackneycoachesandhackneycabs,theword‘hackney’camefromthefrenchword‘Hacquenée’,whichmeansahorseforhire.HackneycoachesworkforhireinLondonwasin1588,CaptainBailyaveteranofSirWalterRaleigh’sexpeditionsputfourcoachestoworkbythemaypoleintheStrand.Bythe1760s,therewereoverathousand‘hackneyhellcarts’hordingthestreetsofLondon,causingsignificantovercrowding.In1823atwo-seat,twowheeledcoachcalledacabrioletwasintroduced.Itwasverypopularforitsspeedandcomfortandfromthisvehiclewederivethename‘cab’.Fromthemiddleofthe19thcenturytwotypesofcabbegantodominate,thetwo-wheeledhansom,afastandelegantcarriageandtheheavyfour-wheeled‘growler’which,withitsluggagecarryingabilitywastobefoundmostlyatrailwaystations.

Somehorsecabscontinuedtoworkintothe1930sbutmosthadgonebytheoutbreakoftheFirstWorldWarin1914.London’sverylasthorsecablicensewassurrenderedonthe3rdApril1947.
