《勾践灭吴》节选原文：

越王勾践栖会稽，乃令范蠡进计。范蠡曰：“夫吴之与越，同壤而世为仇，欲与图事，不可与亲。残其国之政废其宗庙，以绝其世，勿使孑遗。如此吴必亡。”勾践曰：“善。”乃令范蠡率五千人行诈，以疑吴。吴王夫差闻之，大怒，亲率大军征越。越王勾践曰：“吾将亲率大军，与吴决战。”范蠡曰：“不可，吴王自恃勇猛，必轻敌。吾等宜避其锐气，以退为进，伺机而动。”勾践从之。吴军退至阳山，勾践率军追击，大败吴军。夫差败走越王勾践遂灭吴。

King Goujia of Yue was living in Jiaxi, so he ordered Fan Li to come up with a plan. Fan Li said, “The state of Wu and the state of Yue are neighbors with a long history of enmity. If we want to achieve something together, we can't become close allies. We should weaken their government, destroy their temples, and cut off their lineage. In this way, Wu will surely perish.” King Goujia agreed. He then ordered Fan Li to lead 5,000 men in a deceptive operation to confuse the Wu. When King Fuhua of Wu heard about this, he was extremely angry and personally led his troops to invade Yue. King Goujia of Yue said, “I will lead my troops to fight the Wu in person.” Fan Li replied, “That's not a good idea. King Fuhua believes in his own bravery and will underestimate us. We should avoid his fierce fighting spirit, retreat strategically, and wait for the right moment to act.” King Goujia agreed. When the Wu army retreated to Yangshan, King Goujia led his troops to pursue and defeated the Wu army. King Fuhua fled in defeat, and King Goujia of Yue eventually destroyed the state of Wu.
