Computersarenowessentialinmanyareasoflife一modernbanking,retailandinformationexchangeamongothers.However,thisisnottrueforeducation.Atasimplelevelsomesubjectsmaybebettertaughtusingcomputers,buttoexplainimportantconceptsahumanteacherisstillindispensable.

Therearesomesubjectsinwhichacomputercanbeusedsuccessfullytoteach.

Elementarymathematics,elementarylanguagelearningandanyareawhichrequiresastudenttomemorisebasicfactsthroughrepetitioniswellsuitedtocomputerlearning.

Thecomputercanbeprogrammedtoprovideanendlessnumberofsimplequestions.andasthestudentanswersthesequestionsthefactsarelearnedandreinforced.

However,inthelearningandpracticeofmorecomplexideas,thecomputerisnotadequate.Acomputercanevaluateananswerasrightorwrong,butitcannotdeterminewhy.Itcannotfindoutwhyastudentismakingmistakesandthenrepresentimportantconceptsinadifferentwaysothestudentwillunderstand.Itcannotdetermineatwhatstageinamathematicsproblemthestudenthasmadeanerror;itcanonlyindicatethatthefinalansweriswrong.Tasksinvolvingreasoningcannotbetaughtbycomputers,astherearctoomanyvariablesforacomputertodealwithsuccessfully.Inallthesecases,ahumanteacherseemsindispensableinclass.

Thus,whilecomputersmaybeusefulasatoolforpractisingsimpleskills,theyarenotanessentialfeatureofmoderneducation,becausetheycannotmonitorastudent'sgraspofconcepts,norevaluateastudent'sreasoning.Untilfurtherdevelopmentsincomputersaremadethehumanteacherwillremainindispensable.
