Theyear1850maybeconsideredthebeginningofanewepochinAmericaart,withrespecttothedevelopmentofwatercolorpainting.InDecemberofthatyear,agroupofthirtyartistsgatheredinthestudioofJohnFalconerinNewYorkCityanddraftedbothaconstitutionandbylaws,establishingTheSocietyforthePromotionofPaintinginWaterColor.InadditiontosecuringanexhibitionspaceintheLibrarySocietybuildinginlowerManhattan,thesocietyfoundedasmallschoolfortheinstructionofwatercolorpainting.Periodicexhibitionsofthemembers'paintingsalsoincludedworksbynotedEnglishartistsoftheday,borrowedfromembryonicprivatecollectionsinthecity.Thesociety'sactivitiesalsoincludedorganizedsketchingexcursionsalongtheHudsonRiver.Itsmajorpublicexposurecamein1853,whenthesocietypresentedworksbyitsmembersintheIndustryofAllNationssectionoftheCrystalPalaceExpositioninNewYork.

Thesocietydidnotprosper,however,andbythetimeofitsannualmeetingin1854membershiphadfallentotwenty-one.ThegroupgaveupitsquartersintheLibrarySocietybuildingandreturnedtoFalconer'sstudio,whereitbrokeupamiddissension.NofurtherattempttoformallyorganizethegrowingnumbersofwatercolorpaintersinNewYorkCitywasmadeformorethanadecade.Duringthatdecade,though,HenryWarren'sPaintinginWaterColorwaspublishedinNewYorkCityin1856thebookwasaconsiderableimprovementovertheonlyothermanualofinstructionexistingatthetime,ElementsofGraphicArt,byArchibaldRoberson,publishedin1802andbythe1850'slongoutofprint.

In1866theNationalAcademyofDesignwashosttoanexhibitionofwatercolorpaintinginitselaborateneo-VenetianGothicbuildingonTwenty-ThirdStreetinNewYorkCity.TheexhibitwassponsoredbyanindependentgroupcalledTheArtistsFundSociety.Withinafewmonthsofthisevent,forty-twoprominentartistslivinginandnearNewYorkCityfoundedTheAmericanSocietyofPaintersinWaterColors.
