ThePeople'sRepublicofChinaislocatedintheeasternpartoftheAsiancontinent,onthewesternPacificrim.Itisavastland,covering9.6millionsquarekilometers.Chinaisapproximately seventeentimesthesizeofFrance,1millionsquarekilometerssmallerthanallofEurope,and600,000squarekilometerssmallerthanOceania(Australia,NewZealand,andtheislandsofthesouthandcentralPacific).Additionaloffshoreterritory,includingterritorial  waters,specialeconomicareas,andthecontinentalshelf,totalsover3millionsquarekilometers,bringingChina'soverallterritorytoalmost13millionsquarekilometers.

WesternChina'sHimalayanMountainsareoftenreferredtoastheroofoftheworld.MountQomolangma(knowntotheWestasMountEverest),atover8800metersinheight,istheroof'shighestpeak.ChinastretchesfromitswesternmostpointonthePamirPlateautotheconfluenceoftheHeilongjiangandWusuliRivers,5200kilometerstotheeast.

WheninhabitantsofeasternChinaaregreetingthedawn,peopleinwesternChinastillfacefourmorehoursofdarkness.ThenorthernmostpointinChinaislocatedatthemidpointofthe-HeilongjiangRiver,northofMoheinHeilongjiangProvince.ThesouthernmostpointislocatedatZengmu'anshaintheNanshaIslands,approximately5500kilometersaway.WhennorthernChinaisstillgrippedinaworldoficeandsnow,flowersarealreadybloominginthebalmysouth.TheBohaiSea,YellowSea,EastChinaSea,andSouthChinaSeaborderChinatotheeastandsouth,togetherformingavastmaritimearea.TheYellowSea,EastChinaSea,andSouthChinaSeaconnectdirectlywiththePacificOcean,whiletheBohaiSea,embracedbetweenthetwoarmsoftheLiaodongandShandongpeninsulas,formsaninlandsea.China'smaritimeterritoryincludes5400islands,whichhaveatotalareaof80,000squarekilometers.Thetwolargestislands,TaiwanandHainan,cover36,000squarekilometersand34,000squarekilometersrespectively.

Fromnorthtosouth,China'soceanstraitsconsistoftheBohai,Taiwan,Bashi,andQiongzhouStraits.Chinapossesses20,000kilometersoflandborder,plus18,000kilometersofcoastline.SettingoutfromanypointonChina'sborderandmakingacompletecircuitbacktothestartingpoint,thedistancetraveledwouldbeequivalenttocirclingtheglobeattheequator.
