AGreektoRememberDiogeneswasafamousGreekphilosopherofthefourthcenturyB.C.,whoestablishedthephilosophyofcynicism.Heoftenwalkedaboutinthedaytimeholdingalightedlantern,peeringaroundasifhewerelookingforsomething.Whenauestionedabouthisoddbehavior,hewouldreply,'Iamsearchingforanhonestman.'Diogenesheldthatthegoodmanwasself-sufficientanddidnotrequirematerialcomfortsorwealth.Hebelievedthatwealthandpossessionsconstrainedhumanity'snaturalstateoffreedom.Inkeepingwithhisphilosophy,hewasperefectlysatisfiedwithmakingxiaogushi8.comhishomeinalargetubdiscardedfromthetempleofCybele,thegoddessofnature.Thisearthentub,calledapithos,andformerlybeenusedforholdingwineoroilforthesacrificesatthetemple.Oneday,AlexandertheGreat,conquerorofhalfthecivilizedworld,sawDiogenessittinginthistubinthesunshine.Sotheking,surroundedbyhiscountries,approachedDiogenesandsaid,'IamAlexandertheGreat.'Thephilosopherrepliedrathercontemptuously,'IamDiogenes,theCynic.'Alexanderthenaskedhimifhecouldhelphiminanyway.'Yes,'shotbackDiogenes,'don'tstandbetweenmeandthesun.'AsurprisedAlexanderthenrepliedquickly,'IfIwerenotAlexander,IwouldbeDiogenes.'一位值得纪念的希腊人提奥奇尼斯是公元前四世纪一位的希腊哲学家,就是他创立了犬儒派哲学。他经常在白天点着灯笼四处走动、张望，像是在找什么东西似的。哪人们问起他这古怪行为时，他会回答说：“我正在寻找正人君子。”提奥奇尼斯认为好人是自给自足的，不需要物质享受和财富。他认为财富、财产束缚了人们天生的自由状态。与他的哲学相一致，他拿一个从别人从自然之母的庙里丢弃的大坛作为自己的家，还对此万分满意。这个陶制的大坛叫做圣坛，过去在庙里是用来盛装祭祀用的酒和油的。一天征服了半个文明世界的亚历山大大帝看见提奥奇尼斯坐在大坛里晒太阳。于是这位君主在大臣们的簇拥下走过去，对提奥奇尼斯说：“我是亚历山大大帝。”哲学家相当傲慢地回答说：“我是提奥奇尼斯————犬儒学者。”然后亚历山大问他是否需要任何帮助。“是的”，提奥奇尼斯驳回道，“别站在我和太阳之间。”大吃一惊的亚历大继而迅速回答道：“假如我不是亚历山大，我就会是提奥奇斯。”

铁匠与小狗不卖力工作的人理应挨饿。铁匠家有一条小狗，小狗常常在主人打铁时睡觉，但是一到了吃饭时间，便异常清醒起来。有一天铁匠假装对此很生气，一边像往常一样扔给小狗一块骨头，一边说：“地球上还有像你一样懒惰的坏蛋吗？”你这家伙，总是在我卖力工作时，蜷缩起来睡觉，可是，只要我一停下来吃点东西，你就清醒地摇着尾巴过来讨饭吃。“

TheTwoSoldiersAndTheRobberTwoSoldierstravellingtogetherweresetuponbyaRobber.Oneofthemranaway,buttheotherstoodhisground,andlaidabouthimsolustilywithhisswordthattheRobberwasfaintoflyandleavehiminpeace.Whenthecoastwasclearthetimidoneranback,and,flourishinghisweapon,criedinathreateningvoice,“Whereishe?Letmegetathim,andI’llsoonlethimknowwhomhe’sgottodealwith.”Buttheotherreplied,“Youarealittlelate,xiaogushi8.commyfriend:Ionlywishyouhadbackedmeupjustnow,evenifyouhaddonenomorethanspeak,forIshouldhavebeenencouraged,believingyourwordstobetrue.Asitis,calmyourself,andputupyoursword:thereisnofurtheruseforit.Youmaydeludeothersintothinkingyou’reasbraveasalion:butIknowthat,atthefirstsignofdanger,yourunawaylikeahare.”

两个士兵和强盗两个士兵一起赶路，途中被一个强盗所劫。其中一个士兵马上逃跑了，另一个则勇敢地握着剑立在原地，强盗不得不其他而逃。这时候那个胆小的士兵跑过来，抽出剑，壮着胆子大喝一声：“他去哪里了？让我来对付他，我要让他知道面对的是什么人。”但是那名勇敢的士兵说：“你来晚了，我的朋友。要是你刚才能帮我就好了，即便只是嘴上这样说也好，因为我会受到你这番话的鼓舞，并且相信这些话都说真的。而现在还是请你把剑收好，已经没有必要再用它了。你只能欺骗其他人，让人们以为你像雄狮一样勇敢；而我却知道，在遇到危险时，你会像兔子一样落荒而逃。”
