SamuelLanghorneClemens(November30,1835–April21,1910),betterknownbyhispennameMarkTwain,wasanAmericanauthorandhumorist.HewroteTheAdventuresofTomSawyer(1876)anditssequel,AdventuresofHuckleberryFinn(1885),thelatteroftencalledtheGreatAmericanNovel.

TwaingrewupinHannibal,Missouri,whichprovidedthesettingforHuckleberryFinnandTomSawyer.Afteranapprenticeshipwithaprinter,heworkedasatypesetterandcontributedarticlestothenewspaperofhisolderbrotherOrionClemens.HelaterbecameariverboatpilotontheMississippiRiverbeforeheadingwesttojoinOrioninNevada.Hereferredhumorouslytohissingularlackofsuccessatmining,turningtojournalismfortheVirginiaCityTerritorialEnterprise.In1865,hishumorousstory,TheCelebratedJumpingFrogofCalaverasCounty,waspublished,basedonastoryheheardatAngelsHotelinAngelsCamp,California,wherehehadspentsometimeasaminer.Theshortstorybroughtinternationalattention,andwaseventranslatedintoclassicGreek.[4]Hiswitandsatire,inproseandinspeech,earnedpraisefromcriticsandpeers,andhewasafriendtopresidents,artists,industrialists,andEuropeanroyalty.

TwainwasbornshortlyafteravisitbyHalley'sComet,andhepredictedthathewouldgooutwithit,too.Hediedthedayfollowingthecomet'ssubsequentreturn.HewaslaudedasthegreatestAmericanhumoristofhisage,andWilliamFaulknercalledTwainthefatherofAmericanliterature.
