Agreatchangeisnowtakingplaceinhighereducationthroughoutourcountry.Teachersarebeingheldresponsibleasneverbeforeforhowwelltheyservetheirstudents.Ithasbecomeascommonincollegesanduniversitiesforstudentstogradeteachersasforteacherstogradestudents.Insomeuniversitiesstudents’ratinghasevenbecometheonlysourceofinformationonteachingeffectiveness.

This,however,hascausedgreatcontroversy.Someareinfavoroftheratingsystem.Theyholdthatsincestudentsattendtheteachersclasseseveryday,theyshouldhavetheiropinionabouttheirteachers’effectiveness.Others,onthecontrary,arestronglyagainstit.Theythinkthatstudents’ratingiseasytoadministerandscore,butitalsoiseasytoabuse.Theybelievethatthereismuchmoretoteachingthanwhatisshownonstudents’ratingforms.Studentsshouldnotbeexpectedtojudgewhetherthematerialsusedareuptodateorhowwelltheteacherknowsaboutthesubject.

Thesejudgmentsrequireprofessionalknowledge,whichisbestleftfortheteachers’colleagues.

Ithinkstudents’ratingoftheirteachersisnecessary,butitshouldbeconductedinawaythatcanreallyshedmeaningfullightonteachers’performance.Insteadofratingtheteachers’knowledgeonthesubject,studentsshouldbeaskedtoestimatewhattheythemselveshaveleanedinacourse,andtoreportonsuchthingsasateacher’sabilitytocommunicatewithstudents,hisrelationshipwithstudents,andhisabilitytoarouseinterestinthesubject.
