ForthousandsofyearsXi'anwasattheeasternterminusofthegreatSilkRoad,attractingvisitorsfromIndia,Persia,Mesopotamia,Greece,Romeandbeyond.DuringtheHanDynastyChangAnwasoneofthelargestcitiesintheworld,andduringtheTangDynasty,itbecametheworld'slargestandmostprosperouscity.Behindthehugecitywallsstretchedacentralavenueleadingtotheimperialpalacethatwaslaidwithmarbleandonehundredandfiftymetreswide.AlthoughaftertheTangDynastythecitylostitsformergrandeurandprestige,itwasstillconsideredasoneofthemostimportantcitiesinChinainsubsequentdynastiesuptothepresentday.
