BasketballwasontheOlympicprogrammein1904,buttheeventwascontestedbyonlyafewAmericanclubteamsandactuallyservedastheAAU(Amateur（业余爱好者）AthleticUnionoftheUSA)Championshipforthatyear.Thustheeventisusuallyconsideredonlyanexhibition.Thewinningteam,incidentally（偶然地）,wastheBuffaloGermanclub,whichwassodominantinthosedaysthattheywereinducted（引导；引入）intotheBasketballHallofFameasateam.

In1936,basketballmadeitsfirstappearanceasamedalsportattheOlympics,andthesporthasbeenincludedineveryOlympicGamessince.In1976,women'sbasketballwasaddedtotheprogramme.TheUnitedStateshasdominatedinternationalbasketball.TheUSAwonalltheOlympictitlesuntil1972whentheyweredefeatedbytheSovietUnion.TheSovietwomenwereoriginallythetopteamonthefemaleside,winninggoldin1976,1980and1992,buttheUSwomenhavenowsurpassedthem,winninggoldmedalsin1984,1988,1996and2000.

Today,basketballhasbeeoneofthemostpopularsportsintheworld,rivalling（竞争，对抗）football(soccer)forworld-widepopularityandtrailingonlyvolleyballandtrackandfieldathleticsintermsofnumberofmemberfederations.USCollegebasketballiswildlypopularintheUnitedStates,culminatingeachMarchwiththeNCAAChampionships.TheNationalBasketballAssociation(NBA)istheprofessionalbasketballleagueintheUnitedStatesanduniversallyconsideredtobethestrongestintheworldwiththeEuropeanleaguesbeingcloseintermsofpetitionandpublicawareness.
