I'dalwaysresentedmymombecausesheworkedalotwhenIwaslittle,andIdidn'tseemuchofher.OncewegotinsuchabigfightthatIranawayfromhome.ButIonlymadeittothelocaltrainstationbeforemyparentscamelookingformeandtookmehome.

Wegotthere,andIcheckedinandsaidgood-byetomyparents.Iputonanametagandtookaseatinanauditoriumfilledwithabout100otherteens.

Afterwewereallsettledinourseats,TheForumleaderaskedifanyofuswantedtoleave.“Anyonecanwalkoutofhererightnowandgetarefund,”hesaid.Twokidsdidwalkout,Iwouldhaveleft,too,butIdidn'twanttoupsetmyparents.

Bytheendofthesecondday,peoplewerestartingtochange.Oneofmynewfriends,whowasadruguserwentintothebathroomaftertheday'ssessionandflushedabagofweeddownthetoilet.

OnSunday,theleaderdidaninterestingexercisecalled“chocolate/vanilla.”Heaskedoneofustositinachaironthestage,andthenheaskedherifshelikedchocolateorvanillabetter.Shechosechocolate.Thenheaskedanotherpersontosituponthestageandchoosebetweenvanillaandvanilla.Obviously,thesecondpersondidn'thaveachoice.

Uptillthen,Ithoughtthatmylifewasprettybadandwouldalwaysbebad.ItneveroccurredtomethatIcoulddosomethingaboutit.

WhenIgothomefromTheForum,myheadwasspinningwithallthenewideasI'dbeenexposedto.It'shardtoexplainallthethingsIlearned,butsomuchofwhattheytaughtmechangedthewayIthink-aboutschool,aboutmymom,aboutlying,aboutdrugs,aboutmyentirelife.Irealizedthatifmyattitudeaboutschoolcouldchange,Icouldchangemyrelationshipwithmymom.

Wesatdownandhadatotallygreatconversation.Wealsodevisedsomegroundrulesthatbothofuscanlivewith.Nowwegetalong100timesbetter.Ourrelationshipisn'tperfect,butwe'refriends-somethingIneverthoughtwouldbepossible.

Ialsodecidedtomakeotherchanges.Iquitdoingdrugsandhavetriedtostoplying.Instead,Iputmyenergyintootherthings.I'minvolvedinsoccer,volleyball,andtrackandfield.I'veactedinmyschool'sproductionsofTamingoftheShrewandAnimalFarm.I'malsoaneditoroftheschoolpaper.Idon'thatelifeanymore-Iloveit!IneverknewIcouldbesohappy.AndalotofitIowetoTheForum.Iknowitsoundshardtobelieve,butthatweekendtotallychangedmylife.
