Althoughonlyhavingbeenopensince1973,itisasrepresentativeofAustraliaasthepyramidsareofEgyptandtheColosseumofRome.

TheOperaHouseissituatedonBennelongPoint,whichreachesoutintotheharbour.TheskylineoftheSydneyHarbourBridge,thebluewateroftheharbourandtheSydneyOperaHouse,viewedfromaferryorfromtheair,isdramaticandunforgettable.

Ironic,perhaps,thatthisAustralianicon-theOperaHousewitharoofevocativeofashipatfullsail-wasdesignedbyrenownedDanisharchitect-JrnUtzon.

Inthelate1950stheNSWGovernmentestablishedanappealfundtofinancetheconstructionoftheSydneyOperaHouse,andconductedacompetitionforitsdesign.

Utzon'sdesignwaschosen.Theironywasthathisdesignwas,arguably,beyondthecapabilitiesofengineeringofthetime.Utzonspentacoupleofyearsreworkingthedesignanditwas1961beforehehadsolvedtheproblemofhowtobuildthedistinguishingfeature-the'sails'oftheroof.

Theventureexperiencedcostblow-outsandtherewereoccasionswhentheNSWGovernmentwastemptedtocallahalt.In1966thesituation-withargumentsaboutcostandtheinteriordesign,andtheGovernmentwithholdingprogresspayments-reachedcrisispointandJrnUtzonresignedfromtheproject.Thebuildingwaseventuallycompletedbyothersin1973.
