TheSydneyOperaHouseisamulti-venueperformingartscentreinSydney,Australia.Itisoneofthe20thcentury'smostfamousanddistinctivebuildings.

DesignedbyDanisharchitectJørnUtzon,thebuildingwasformallyopenedon20October1973afteragestationbeginningwithUtzon's1957selectionaswinnerofaninternationaldesigncompetition.ThegovernmentofNewSouthWales,ledbythepremier,JosephCahill,authorisedworktobeginin1958withUtzondirectingconstruction.Thegovernment'sdecisiontobuildUtzon'sdesignisoftenovershadowedbycircumstancesthatfollowed,includingcostandschedulingoverrunsaswellasthearchitect'sultimateresignation.

ThebuildinganditssurroundsoccupythewholeofBennelongPointinSydneyHarbour,betweenSydneyCoveandFarmCove,adjacenttotheSydneycentralbusinessdistrictandtheRoyalBotanicGardens,andclosebytheSydneyHarbourBridge.

Thoughitsnamesuggestsasinglevenue,thebuildingcomprisesmultipleperformancevenueswhichtogetherareamongthebusiest[citationneeded]performingartscentres–hostingwellover1,500performancesannually,attendedbymorethan1.2millionpeople.Performancesarepresentedbynumerousperformingartists,includingfourresidentcompanies:OperaAustralia,TheAustralianBallet,theSydneyTheatreCompanyandtheSydneySymphonyOrchestra.AsoneofthemostpopularvisitorattractionsinAustralia,morethaneightmillionpeoplevisitthesiteannually,andapproximately350,000visitorstakeaguidedtourofthebuildingeachyear.ThebuildingismanagedbytheSydneyOperaHouseTrust,anagencyoftheNewSouthWalesStateGovernment.

On28June2007,theSydneyOperaHousebecameaUNESCOWorldHeritageSite.
