Thefouryearsthatfollowedtaughtmetheimportanceofoptimism,buttheideadidnotcometomeatonce.ForthefirsttwoyearsinNewYorkIwasreallylost—havingtostudyinthreeschoolsasaresultoffamilymoves.IdidnotquiteknowwhatIwasorwhatIshouldbe.Motherremarried,andthingsbecameevenmorecomplexforme.SometimepassedbeforemystepfatherandIgotusedtoeachother.Iwasoftensad,andsawnoendto“thehardtimes.”

MyresponsibilitiesinthefamilyincreasedalotsinceIknewEnglishbetterthaneveryoneelseathome.Iwroteletters,filledoutforms,translatedatinterviewswithImmigrationofficers,tookmygrandparentstothedoctorandtranslatedthere,andevendiscussedtelephonebillswithcompanyrepresentatives.

FrommyexperiencesIhavelearnedoneimportantrule:Almostallcommontroubleseventuallygoaway!Somethinggoodiscertaintohappenintheendwhenyoudonotgiveup,andjustwaitalittle!Ibelievethatmylifewillturnoutallright,eventhoughitwillnotbethateasy.

我如何变得乐观

我开始长大在那个冬季的晚上，当我的父母和我从我的姑姑家返回的时候，我的母亲说，我们可能不久将离开美国。我们当时在公共汽车上。我哭有些在公共汽车上的人转过头看着我。我记得我无法忍受再也听不到每天早上为小学生们播放的电台节目的思绪了。

Architectshavelonghadthefeelingthattheplacesweliveincanaffectourthoughts,feelingsandbehaviors,Butnowscientistsaregivingthisfeelingsanempirical（经验的,实证的）basis.Theyarediscoveringhowtodesignspacesthatpromotecreativity,keeppeoplefocused,andleadtorelaxation.

Researchesshowthataspectsofthephysicalenvironmentcaninfluencecreativity.In2007,JoanMeyers-LevyattheUniversityofMinnesota,reportedthattheheightofaroom’sceilingaffectshowpeopletothink.Herresearchindicatesthatthehighercallingsencouragepeopletothinkmorefreely,whichmayleadthemtomakemoreabstractconnections.Lowceilings,ontheotherhand,mayinspireamoredetailedoutlook.

Inadditiontoceilingheight,theviewaffordedbyabuildingmayinfluenceanoccupant’sabilitytoconcentrate.NancyWellsandhercolleaguesatCornellUniversityfoundintheirstudythatkidswhoexperiencedthegreatestincreaseingreennessasaresultofafamilymovemadethemostgainsonastandardtestofattention.

Usingnaturetoimprovefocusofattentionoughttopayoffacademically,anditseemsto,accordingtoastudyledbyC.KennethTanner,headoftheSchoolDesign＆PlanningLaboratoryatUniversityofGeorgia.Tannerandhisteamfoundthatstudentsinclassroomswithunblockedviewsofatleast50feetoutsidethewindowhadhigherscoresontestsofvocabulary,languageartsandmathsthandidstudentswhoseclassroomsprimarilyoverlookedroadsandparkinglots.

Recentstudyonroomlightingdesignsuggeststhatdim（暗淡的）lighthelpspeopletoloosenup.Ifthatistruegenerally,keepingthelightlowduringdinneroratpartiescouldincreaserelaxation.ResearchersofHarvardMedicalSchoolalsodiscoveredthatfurniturewithroundededgescouldhelpvisitorsrelax.

Sofarscientistshavefocusedmainlyonpublicbuildings.“Wehaveaverylimitednumberofstudies,sowe’realmostlookingattheproblemthroughastraw（吸管）,”architectDavidAllisonsays.“Howdoyoutakeanswerstoveryspecificquestionsandmakebroad,generalizeduseofthem?That’swhatwe'reallstrugglingwith.”

Musicprovidesakindofperception（感知）thatcannotbeacquiredanyotherway.Sciencecanexplainhowthesunrisesandsets.Theartsexploreemotive（情感的）meaningofthesamephenomenon.Weneedeverypossiblewaytodiscoverandrespondtoourworldforonesimplebutpowerfulreason:Noonewaycangetitall.

Theartsareformsofthoughtaspowerfulinwhattheycommunicateasmathematicalandscientificsymbols.Theyarewayswehumanbeings“talk”toeachother.Theyarethelanguageofcivilizationthroughwhichweexpressourfears,ourcuriosities,ourhungers,ourdiscoveries,ourhopes.Theartsarewayswegiveformtoourideasandimaginationsothattheycanbesharedwithothers.Whenwedonotgivechildrenaccesstoanimportantwayofexpressingthemselvessuchasmusic,wetakeawayfromthemthemeaningsthatmusicexpresses.

Scienceandtechnologydonottelluswhatitmeanstobehuman.Theartsdo.Musicisanimportantwayweexpresshumansuffering,celebration,themeaningandvalueofpeaceandlove.

Somusiceducationisfarmorenecessarythanpeopletorealize.
