Ganzhou(simplifiedChinese:赣州;traditionalChinese:赣州;pinyin:Gànzhōu)(alsoformerlyknowninEnglishasKanchou)isaprefecture-levelcityinJiangxiprovince,China.ItsadministrativeseatisatZhanggong(章贡).

In201,EmperorGaozuoftheHanDynastyestablishedacountyintheterritoryofmodernGanzhou.Inthoseearlyyears,ethnicHansettlementandauthorityintheareawasminimalandlargelyrestrictedtotheGanRiverbasin.Theriver,atributaryoftheYangtzeRiverviaPoyangLake,providedarouteofcommunicationfromthenorthaswellasirrigationforricefarming.

DuringtheSuiDynastythecountyadministrationwaspromotedtoprefecturestatusandtheareacalledQianzhou(虔州).DuringtheSongDynastyimmigrationfromthenorthbolsteredthelocalpopulationanddrovelocalaboriginaltribesfurtherintothehills.EspeciallyafterthefalloftheNorthernSongcapitalofKaifeng,migrantsincreaseddramatically.ThenamewasofficiallychangedtoGanzhouintheSouthernSong.

Duringthelate1800sGanzhouwasopenedasoneofthesoutherntreatyportsandbecameaminorbaseforforeigncompanies.Between1929and1934,GanzhouformedapartoftheJiangxiSoviet,oneofthebasesoftheCommunistPartyofChina.DuetoitsproximitytotheRedcapitalRuijin(瑞金),GanzhouwassubjecttoanumberofKuomintangencirclementcampaigns.
