TheNewFourthArmy(traditionalChinese:新四军;simplifiedChinese:新四军;pinyin:Xīn4Jūn)wasaunitoftheNationalRevolutionaryArmyoftheRepublicofChina.IncontrasttomostoftheNationalRevolutionaryArmy,itwascontrolledbytheCommunistPartyofChinaandnotbytherulingKuomintang.TheNewFourthArmyandtheEighthRouteArmywerethetwomaincommunistforcesfrom1938.TheNewFourthArmywasactivesouthoftheYangtzeRiver(ChangJiang),whiletheEighthRouteArmywasbasedinYan'aninthenorthwest.

MembersoftheNewFourthArmyworetheirbadgesontheleftarm,withN4Aandthesoldier'sunitandnamelistedonthebadge.

AftertheXi'anIncident,theKuomintangledbyChiangKai-shekandtheCommunistPartyofChinaledbyMaoZedongformedaUnitedFrontagainstJapan,whichwasalreadyincontrolofManchuria.ThiswasthesecondoftheKMT-CPCUnitedFronts.TheMarcoPoloBridgeIncidentinJuly1937markedthebeginningoftheSino-JapaneseWar(1937-1945).

InOctober,1937,anannouncementwasmadethatRedArmysoldiersactiveintheeightprovincesinsouthernChina—thosewhodidnotembarkontheLongMarchwouldbepartoftheNewFourthArmy.TheNewFourthArmywasestablishedonDecember25,1937inHankou,movingtoNanchangonJanuary6,1938,whenthedetachmentsbeganmarchingtothebattlefront.Atthebeginning,theNewFourthArmyhadfourdetachmentsandonetaskforcebattalionandnumberedroughlytenthousand.LaterthearmymovedtoAnhuiprovince.YeTingwasthearmycommander,XiangYingthedeputyarmycommander.

ItwasintheoryaunitedfrontagainstJapanbutinpracticetherewasfrictionbetweenNationalistandCommunistForces,whichintensifiedinthefallof1940,culminatingintheNewFourthArmyIncidentwithafullfledgedbattlebetweentheNewFourthArmyandKMTNationalRevolutionaryArmyforces.Upuntilthatpoint,mostofthebattleshadbeenskirmishes.Thearmywasfullyreorganisedaftertheincidentandremainedinactivecombactuntiltheendofthewar.
