Manypeoplethinkofair,water,andsoilpollutionasdistinctformsofpollution.However,eachofthepartsofanenvironment—air,water,andsoil—dependsupontheothersandupontheplantsandanimalslivingwithintheenvironment.Therelationshipsamongallthelivingandnonlivingthingsinanenvironmentmakeupanecologicalsystem,calledanecosystem.Alltheecosystemsoftheearthareconnected.Thus,pollutionthatseemstoaffectonlyonepartoftheenvironmentmayalsoaffectotherparts.Forexample,sootysmokefromapowerplantmightappeartoharmonlytheatmosphere.Butraincanwashsomeharmfulchemicalsinthesmokeoutoftheskyandontolandorintowaterways.

Somepollutioncomesfromonespecificpointorlocation,suchasasewagepipespillingdirtywaterintoariver.Suchpollutioniscalledpointsourcepollution.Otherpollutioncomesfromlargeareas.Watercanrunofffarmlandandcarrypesticidesandfertilizersintorivers.Rainwatercanwashgasoline,oil,andsaltfromhighwaysandparkinglotsintothewellsthatsupplydrinkingwater.Pollutionthatcomesfromsuchlargeareasiscallednonpointsourcepollution.

Nearlyeveryonewouldliketohavepollutionreduced.Unfortunately,mostofthepollutionthatnowthreatensthehealthofourplanetcomesfromproductsthatmanypeoplewantandneed.Forexample,automobilesprovidetheconvenienceofpersonaltransportation,buttheycreatealargepercentageoftheworld'sairpollution.Factoriesmakeproductsthatpeopleuseandenjoy,butindustrialprocessescanalsopollute.Pesticidesandfertilizersaidingrowinglargequantitiesoffood,buttheyalsopoisonthesoilandwaterways.Toendorgreatlydecreasepollution,peoplewouldhavetoreduceuseofcarsandothermodernconveniences,andsomefactorieswouldhavetocloseorchangeproductionmethods.Becausemostpeople'sjobsaredependentonindustriesthatcontributetoenvironmentalpollution,shuttingdowntheseindustrieswouldincreaseunemployment.Inaddition,iffarmerssuddenlystoppedusingchemicalfertilizersandpesticides,therewouldbelessfoodtofeedthepeopleoftheworld.

Overtime,however,pollutioncanbegraduallyreducedinmanywayswithoutseriouslydisruptingpeople'slives.Forexample,governmentscanpasslawsthatencouragebusinessestoadoptlesspollutingmethodsofoperation.Scientistsandengineerscandevelopproductsandprocessesthatarecleanerandsaferfortheenvironment.Andindividualsaroundtheworldcanthemselvesfindwaystoreduceenvironmentalpollution.望采纳
