Irelandisasmall,independentcountrylocatedinnorthwesternEurope.Thecountry'sofficialnameistheRepublicofIreland.Dublinisthecapitalandlargestcity.Thecountryoccupiesaboutfive-sixthsoftheislandofIreland.Theremainingone-sixthoftheislandisoccupiedbyNorthernIreland,whichispartoftheUnitedKingdomofGreatBritainandNorthernIreland.

InGaelic,theancientlanguageofIreland,thecountryiscalledEire(pronouncedAIRuh).GaelicandEnglisharethecountry'stwoofficiallanguages.IrelandalsohaslongbeenknownbythepoeticnameErin.IrelandisalsoknownastheEmeraldIsle.Itiscalledthisbecauseofitsbeautifulgreencountryside.Rollingfarmlands,whicharemainlypasture,covermuchofthecentralpartofthecountry,andmountainsrisenearthecoasts.

Irelandisdividedinto26counties,andsomeofthecountiesareknownforspecialfeatures.Forexample,CountyKerryisfamousforitsmountainsandthescenicLakesofKillarney.CountyWaterfordisknownforitsdelicatecutglass,andCountyDonegalisfamousforitstweedcloth.

ManypeopleconsidertheIrishtobeexceptionallywarm-heartedandfriendly.TheIrishalsohaveareputationforhospitality,closefamilyties,andskillaswritersandstorytellers.

TheIrishhavealonghistorythatincludesmanyhardshipsandstruggles.Inthe1840's,apotatoblightandthestarvationanddiseasethatfollowedcausedthedeathsofaboutamillionpeopleandatleastasmanypeoplelefttheirhomeland.Afterthisfamine,ashortageofjobsandotherproblemscausedemigrationtocontinue.Asaresult,littlemorethanhalfasmanypeopleliveinIrelandtodayaslivedtherein1845.

IrelandwasunderBritishruleforhundredsofyears.IrelandgaineditsindependencefromBritainin1921.
