ADOG,crossingabridgeoverastreamwithapieceoffleshinhismouth,sawhisownshadowinthewater,andtookitforthatofanotherDog,withapieceofmeatdoublehisowninsize.Hethereforeletgohisown,andfiercelyattackedtheotherDog,togethislargerpiecefromhim.Hethuslostboth:thatwhichhegraspedatinthewater,becauseitwasashadow;andhisown,becausethestreamsweptitaway.

WHENGeeWashingtonwasaboutsixyearsold,hewasmadethewealthymasterofahatchetofwhich,likemostlittleboys,hewasextremelyfond.Hewentaboutchoppingeverythingthatcamehisway.

Oneday,ashewanderedaboutthegardenamusinghimselfbyhackinghismother'spea-sticks,hefoundabeautiful,youngEnglishcherrytree,ofwhichhisfatherwasmostproud.Hetriedtheedgeofhishatchetonthetrunkofthetreeandbarkeditsothatitdied.

Sometimeafterthis,hisfatherdiscoveredwhathadhappenedtohisfavoritetree.Hecameintothehouseingreatanger,anddemandedtoknowwhothemischievouspersonwaswhohadcutawaythebark.Nobodycouldtellhimanythingaboutit.

JustthenGee,withhislittlehatchet,cameintotheroom.

Gee,saidhisfather,doyouknowwhohaskilledmybeautifullittlecherrytreeyonderinthegarden?Iwouldnothavetakenfiveguineasforit!
