MaijiMountainis150meterstall,anditwasnamedforitsshape--likethatofapileofwheat.Accordingtohistoricalrecords,theMaijiGrottoeswereexcavatedduringtheHouQinDynastyoftheSixteenKingdomPeriod.TheMaijiMountainGrottoeshavealonghistory.Excavationandrockcarvingcontinuedformorethanathousandyears.DuringtheBeizhouDynasty,LiyunxinbuilttheSeven-BuddhaPavilioninmemoryofhisdeceasedfather.EmperorWenDioftheSuiDynastyorderedtheconstructionofaBuddhistnunsite.ThepresentdagobaonthetopofthemountainwasrebuiltintheQingDynasty.Alotoftheoriginaltempleshavebeendestroyed,butalotremain.ThereareveryoldfrescoesdatingfrombeforetheSuiDynasty.

Intheareaarepreserved194grottoesofdynastiessuchastheBeiwei,Xiwei,Beizhou,Sui,andTang,theFiveDynasties,Song,Yuan,MingandQing.Thereare7000claysculpturesandcarvedstonestatues.Thisgrottogroup,unlikethecolumn-centeredcavesinthefamousMogaoGrottoes,wasbuiltfullyaccordingtoancientChinesetradition.Manyfinestatues,carvedbeforetheSuiDynasty,aremuchmorevaluablethanthestatuesintheMogaoGrottoesthatweremodifiedafterwardsduringseveraldynasties.

TheartisticstyleinthesegrottoesshowtheinfluenceofCentralAsiancultures.TheMaijishanGrottoesdisplaythefeaturesofthecultureoftheCentralPlainsbecauseitsgeographicalpositionisneartheCentralPlains.TheYungangGrottoes,SichuanDazuRockCarvings,HuangzeTempleCavesandtheMaijishanGrottoesimpactedeachotherinstyle.

IntheMaijishanGrottoes,thetalleststatueis16meterstallandthesmallestisonly10cmtall.ThestatueinGrottoNo.44iscalledTheVenusoftheEast.OnthefrocksofthestatuesinGrottoNo.78andGrottoNo.128,patternswerecurvedwithvividdetail.InSeven-BuddhaPavilionthatisover70metersinheight,thestatueisofdelicatebeauty,andonthetopoftheaislethefrescoesareexquisite.Atthewesternendoftheaisle,arecarvedcarriagesandpedestrianswhichareheadingdifferentdirectionswhichcanbeviewedfromdifferentangles.ItcanberatedasthemasterpieceofChinesefrescocomposition.SeeancientgrottoesinChina.

TheMaijishanGrottoesarepartoftheMaijishanMountainscenicreserveareawithforestsandalargevarietyofplantsandanimals.Itisabeautifulscenicspotintheareaandhasinterestinggeology.Themountainpeakisabout1,700metersabovesealevel.
