　　EmeiMountainliessevenkilometerssouthwestofEmeishanCityandisoneofthefourmountainrangesinChinathatBuddhistsconsidersacred.ItwasincludedintheUNESCOworldheritagelistin1996.Themountainstretchesmorethan200kilometersfromsouthtonorth.Itsmainpeak,WanfoTop,is3,099metersabovesealevel.SinceancienttimesEmeiMountainhasbeendescribedasBeautyUnderHeaven.TempleswerebuiltasearlyastheEasternHanDynasty(25--220)andBuddhismwasintroducedtothemountainduringtheJinDynasty.IntheMingandQingdynastiesthereweremorethan150temples.

　　AlegendclaimsthatthemountainwaswhereSamantabhadragavelecturesonBuddhismandmosttempleshouseastatueofSamantabhadra.ThemainscenicspotsonthemountainincludetheBaoguoTemple,WannianTemple,Fohutemple,QingyinPavilion,HeilongjiangTunnel,HongchunPlatform,XianfengTemple(JiulaoCave),XixiangPondandGoldenSummit.Theseplacesareatdifferentaltitudesandhavedifferentclimates.Temperaturesatthetopofmountainare15degreeslowerthanatthefoot.EmeiMountainisawell-knownnaturalmuseumwithmorethan3,000specimensofplantsand2,000typesofanimalsincludinggroupsofmonkeysthatappearonthemountainroadsandfascinatethetourists.

　　BaoguoTemplesitsatthefootofthemountainattheentranceandexitofthemountainarea.ThetemplewasbuiltduringthereignofMingEmperorWanli(1573--1620).About15kilometersfromtheBaoguoTempleisWannianTemple,oneofthemaintemplesinthemountainarea.WannianTemple,ortheTempleofSamantabhadraasitwasknownbeforetheMingDynasty,wasbuiltduringthereignofEmperorLong''anoftheEasternJindynasty(397--401).IthasnobeamsandhousesabronzestatueofBuddhaSamantabhadramountedonasix-toothedwhiteelephantcastin1980,thefifthyearoftheNorthernSongDynasty.Thestatueis7.3metershighandweighs62tons.XianfengTempleissituatedathefootoftheJiulaoPeakandtheoldhallswerebuiltwithtinsheetsandirontiles.Theintacthallswererebuiltin1779.FohuTempleislocatedonekilometerwestofBaoguoTempleandatthefootofFohuHill.Itisoneofthelargesttempleinthemountainarea.Rebuiltin1651,itcoversanareaof13,000squaremetersandisaccessiblefromthehighway.AttheGoldenSummit,thepinnacleofthemountainarea3,065metersabovesealevel,isPuguangHallofTemple.ItwasconstructedduringtheEasternHanDynastyandhasbeenrebuiltseveraltimesafterbeingstruckbylightning.TheGoldenSummitisanidealplacetoviewthesunrise,theseaofclouds,theBuddhistlightsandSacredlamps.

　　TheGiantBuddhaontheeastbankofMingjiangRiverinLeshanCity,SichuanProvince,restshisfeetwherethreerivers--theMinjiang,QingyiandDadu--join.TheBuddhafacesEmeiMountainacrosstheriverandatitsbackisthewesternslopeofLingyunMountain.Standingat70.7meterswithshoulders24meterswideitisanimpressivesight.Awaterdrainagesystemreduceserosionbyrainandslowsweathering.

　　Thestatuewasbegunin713andcompletedin803.Totherightofthestatueaplankroadwithnineturnswasbuiltanditisnowfamousasthenine-turnplankroad;itgoesfromthebottomtothetop.
