在1979年11月，在英国的学生们能够观看一个新的电视节目叫《猴子》。他们大多数都是第一次听到这个故事。但是这个故事对来自中国孩子并不陌生。“美猴王”还“孙悟空”是中国传统古借《西游记》中的主角。

孙悟空不是一只普通的猴子。事实上他有时甚至看起来不像一只猴子！这是因为他有72变，可更改自己的形状和大小，把自己变成不同的动物和物体。但是除非他隐藏自己的尾巴，否则他不能变成人。孙悟空使金刚棒拍打坏人，有时他会把金刚棒缩小藏在耳朵里。有时候他能可把棒变大变长。

多年来孙悟空已让许多中国的孩子很兴奋。30多年前当电视节目播出后，西方的孩子开始对这个故事产生兴趣，因为聪明的孙悟空一直锄强扶弱，永不放弃。
