Ego—Theegoisthelargelyunconsciouspartofpersonalitythatmediatesthedemandsoftheid,thesuperego,andreality.Theegopreventsusfromactingonourbasicurges(createdbytheid),butalsoworkstoachieveabalancewithourmoralandidealisticstandards(createdbythesuperego).
Id—Thepersonalitycomponentmadeupofunconsciouspsychicenergythatworkstosatisfybasicurges,needs,anddesires.
Superego—Thecomponentofpersonalitycomposedofourinternalizedidealsthatwehaveacquiredfromourparentsandfromsociety.Thesuperegoworkstosuppresstheurgesoftheidandtriestomaketheegobehavemorally,ratherthanrealistically.
Unconscious—Areservoiroffeelings,thoughts,urges,andmemoriesthatoutsideofourconsciousawareness.Mostofthecontentsoftheunconsciousareunacceptableorunpleasant,suchasfeelingsofpain,anxiety,orconflict.AccordingtoFreud,theunconsciouscontinuestoinfluenceourbehaviorandexperience,eventhoughweareunawareoftheseunderlyinginfluences.
