ResearchBackground:

Alanguagenotonlyexpressesfacts,ideas,oreventswhichrepresentsimilarworldknowledgebyitspeople,butalsoreflectsthepeople’sattitudes,beliefs,andworldoutlooksetc.Peopleofdifferentculturesstructuretheworldaroundthemdifferently,atleastinthelanguagetheyusetodescribethatworld.Languagesdifferenormouslyfromoneanother,andthesedifferencesarerelatedtoimportantdifferencesinthecustomsandbehaviorsandotheraspectsoftheculturesinwhichthoselanguagereside.Inaword,languageisamirrorofculture.

Whenwelearnanewwordwetendtolookforitsmeaningintheworditself.Yetinadditiontoitsdictionarymeanings,thesamewordmaystirupdifferentassociationsinpeople,becauseofculturaldifferences.Inourdailylife,colorwordsarethecommonillustrationsoftheculturaldifferencesinlanguageuse.InChineseandEnglishcultures,colorwordsareinthesamewayinfluencedbycultures,andusedwidelyinpeople’sdailylife.

ResearchSignificance:

AsthedifferencesbetweenEasternandWesternculturesledtotheunderstandingofthecolorwordsarenotthesame.Colorwordscontainalotofdeepmeaning,impliesadifferentethnicfeelings.Ifwedonottakeintoaccounttheimpactofculturaldifferences,wearedifficulttounderstandtheimplicitmeaningofcolorwords.Thesignificanceofthisthesisistoenableabetterunderstandingofcolorwords,inordertoenhancecommunicationskills,avoidconflictofcultures.
