Diabetesmellitus,oftensimplyreferredtoasdiabetes—isagroupofmetabolicdiseasesinwhichapersonhashighbloodsugar,eitherbecausethebodydoesnotproduceenoughinsulin,orbecausecellsdonotrespondtotheinsulinthatisproduced.Thishighbloodsugarproducestheclassicalsymptomsofpolyuria(frequenturination),polydipsia(increasedthirst)andpolyphagia(increasedhunger).

Therearethreemaintypesofdiabetes:

1.Type1diabetes:resultsfromthebody'sfailuretoproduceinsulin,andpresentlyrequiresthepersontoinjectinsulin.(Alsoreferredtoasinsulin-dependentdiabetesmellitus,IDDMforshort,andjuvenilediabetes.)

2.Type2diabetes:resultsfrominsulinresistance,aconditioninwhichcellsfailtouseinsulinproperly,sometimescombinedwithanabsoluteinsulindeficiency.(Formerlyreferredtoasnon-insulin-dependentdiabetesmellitus,NIDDMforshort,andadult-onsetdiabetes.)

3.Gestationaldiabetes:iswhenpregnantwomen,whohaveneverhaddiabetesbefore,haveahighbloodglucoselevelduringpregnancy.Itmayprecededevelopmentoftype2DM.

Otherformsofdiabetesmellitusincludecongenitaldiabetes,whichisduetogeneticdefectsofinsulinsecretion,cysticfibrosis-relateddiabetes,steroiddiabetesinducedbyhighdosesofglucocorticoids,andseveralformsofmonogenicdiabetes.
