In1945thewarendedinavictoryfortheAllies.TheSovietUnionandtheUnitedStatessubsequentlyemergedastheworld'ssuperpowers,settingthestagefortheColdWar,whichlastedforthenext45years.TheUnitedNationswasformedinthehopeofpreventinganothersuchconflict.Theacceptanceofself-determinationaccelerateddecolonizationmovementsinAsiaandAfrica,whileWesternEuropeitselfbeganmovingtowardintegration.
