LaunchedfromFloridaonJuly16,thethirdlunarmissionofNASA'sApolloprogram(andtheonlyG-typemission)wascrewedbyCommanderNeilAldenArmstrong,CommandModulePilotMichaelCollins,andLunarModulePilotEdwinEugeneBuzzAldrin,Jr.OnJuly20,ArmstrongandAldrinlandedintheSeaofTranquilityandbecamethefirsthumanstowalkontheMoon.Theirlandingcraft,Eagle,spent21hoursand31minutesonthelunarsurfacewhileCollinsorbitedaboveinthecommandship,Columbia.ThethreeastronautsreturnedtoEarthwith47.5pounds(21.5kg)oflunarrocksandlandedinthePacificOceanonJuly24.

Apollo11fulfilledU.S.PresidentJohnF.Kennedy'sgoalofreachingthemoonbeforetheSovietUnionbytheendofthe1960s,whichhehadexpressedduringa1961missionstatementbeforetheUnitedStatesCongress:Ibelievethatthisnationshouldcommititselftoachievingthegoal,beforethisdecadeisout,oflandingamanontheMoonandreturninghimsafelytotheEarth.
