Cigarettepackwarningsthatremindsmokersofthefatalconsequencesoftheirhabitmayactuallymakethemsmokemoreasawaytocopewiththeinevitabilityofdeath,accordingtoresearchers.AsmallstudybypsychologistsfromtheUnitedStates,SwitzerlandandGermanyshowedthatwarningsunrelatedtodeath,suchassmokingmakesyouunattractiveorsmokingbringsyouandthepeoplearoundyouseveredamage,weremoreeffectiveinchangingsmokers'attitudestowardtheirhabit.Thiswasespeciallythecaseinpeoplewhosmokedtoboosttheirself-esteem,suchasyouthwhotookupthehabittoimpressorfitinwiththeirpeersandotherswhothoughtsmokingincreasedtheirsocialvalue,theresearcherssaid.Ingeneral,whensmokersarefacedwithdeath-relatedanti-smokingmessagesoncigarettepacks,theyproduceactivecopingattemptsasreflectedintheirwillingnesstocontinuetheriskysmokingbehavior,thestudysaid.Tosucceedwithanti-smokingmessagesoncigarettepacksonehastotakeintoaccountthatconsideringtheirdeathmaymakepeoplesmoke.Thestudywasbasedon39psychologystudents,agedbetween17and41,whosaidtheyweresmokers.Participantsfilledinaquestionnairetodeterminehowmuchtheirsmokingwasbasedonself-esteem,werethenshowncigarettepackswithdifferentwarningsonthem,andthenaftera15-minutedelay,thestudentswereaskedmorequestionsabouttheirsmokingbehaviorthatincludediftheyintendedtoquit.Ontheonehand,death-relatedwarningswerenoteffectiveandevenironicallycausedmorepositivesmokingattitudesamongsmokerswhobasedtheirself-esteemonsmoking,thestudysaid.Ontheotherhand,warningmessagesthatwereunrelatedtodeatheffectivelyreducedsmokingattitudesthemorerecipientsbasedtheirself-esteemonsmoking.Theresearcherssaidthisfindingcanbeexplainedbythefactthatwarningssuchassmokingmakesyouunattractivemaybeparticularlythreateningtopeoplewhobelievethatsmokingmakesthemfeelvaluedbyothersorbooststheirself-image.ThestudywaspublishedintheJournalofExperimentalSocialPsychology.
