Researchneedstobeperformedtoassessastronautperformanceforlong-durationspacemissionswithparticularemphasisondevelopingcountermeasurestospaceflight-induceddeconditioning.Pre-,inflight,andpostflightinvestigationsofastronautsexposedtolong-durationspaceflightaboardtheInternationalSpaceStationwillhelpanswerthequestionofwhatarethebasicmechanismsunderlyingadapationtomicrogravity.Thisinformationhasimplicationsforfuturecountermeasureinterventions.Iflong-durationspaceflightleadstogeneraldeteriorationinastroanutperformancetheninflightcountermeasuresthatenhanceperformancecanbeenvisioned.Somecombinationofexercise,medication,andperhaps,artificialgravity,willbeprescribedascountermeasuresforlong-durationspacemissions,especiallyforfuturemissionstothemoonorMars.
